Whats the craze: health foods we’ve been hearing about lately

As someone who is invested in health and nutrition, I want to be aware of all the latest products that have major health benefits. There is so much hype in the fitness world about new foods, supplements and drinks. It can get overwhelming at times to decipher between the fads and quality products.

Just take the time to research and find whats best for you. Try new foods to get your own opinion and see what works. Even is your not into it, hey, you gave it a go! Be proud that you took a step to do something better for yourself. On the other hand, you could find your new go-to food that has tons of health benefits.

Four products that I have heard a lot about lately are apple cider vinegar, bone broth, coconut oil and ghee. I have outlined what each product is, the health benefits and how to incorporate them into your diet.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Health benefits:
    • High in bioflavonoids, which enhance oxidation of vitamin C, support blood circulation and act as an antioxidant in the body.
    • Provides energy- high in vitamins A, B1, B6, B12 and C
    • Controls blood sugar, which promotes weight loss
    • Fights internal infections
    • Improves skin quality
  • Apple cider vinegar is not the tastiest thing on the market. Although all the health benefits are worth downing a shot in the morning (or half a shot).

2. Bone broth

  • By cooking bones with acidic ingredients like vinegar and tomatoes, it causes them to break down and release lots of protein. Bone broth is rich in collagen protein, which makes your skin smoother and helps repair connective tissue.

  • Health benefits:
    • Soothes the stomach- collagen repairs damage in the gastrointestinal tract.
    • Recover post workout- bone broth contains lots of protein and electrolytes, just what the body craves post workout.
    • Aids in weight loss- has glutamic acid, which is an amino acid that
      binds to taste receptors on the tongue. The binding helps to experience the savory flavor more intensely, boosting satiety and making one feel full.
    • Boost Immune system- contains carnosine, which is an anti-inflammatory compound that relives symptoms of a cold.
  • Bone broth is available to purchase at grocery stores. I like boxed chicken bone broth. You can also make your own if your feeling ambitious!

3. Coconut Oil

  • Coconut oil has been slammed for years because of its high content of saturated fats. However, not all saturated fat behaves the same in the body. Research has taken a closer look at coconut and found many health benefits. In particular, coconut oil is the most nutrient dense part of the coconut. It has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti fungal properties.
  • Health benefits:
    • Contains medium-chained fatty acids (MCFA), which are quickly broken down to provide energy.
    • Increase metabolism- the MCFA are directed to the liver to give the body an instant source of enCoconut oil.jpgergy. The liver will release these fatty acids for energy, increasing total fat burn throughout the day.
    • High in Lauric Acid- found in human breast milk, lauric acid increases immunity, fights viruses and prevents
      disease.
    • Many countries who consume lots of coconut have high life spans. 1/3 of the worlds population depends on coconuts for fuel.
  • Uses:
    • Cooking
    • Replace butter or oil with coconut oil when making baked goods.
    • Add to smoothies, green tea or coffee (to replace creamer)
    • Topical uses: skin lotion, hair conditioner, make-up remover, for shaving, massage oil, use on minor cuts or scrapes.

4. Ghee

  • Ghee is butter that is clarified, unsalted and all milk proteins are removed. Leaving only pure, healthy fats. Ghee was originated in ancient India and is commonly used in South Asian cuisines, traditional medicine and religious rituals.

  • Health benefits:
    • Great source of fat soluble vitamins A, E and K.
    • Good for teeth, hair, skin and nails.
    • Beats out butter because it has a more intense flavor and its more nutrient dense.
    • Like coconut oil, ghee contains MCFA to rev up the metabolism to burn more fat throughout the day. MCFA are broken down a lot quicker than long-chain fatty acids, which are found in traditional butter.
    • Anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Ghee has a high smoke point, which makes it great for cooking and sautéing. It can be used in place of traditional butter. It is solid at room temperature and does not require refrigeration, so its great for traveling or hiking.

    I love that you place such an emphasis on whole and natural foods. It’s so important. Fitness and health is way more of a percentage of food than exercise. What inspired you to start your blog?
